Family AI collaboration contract
The most important thing about this contract isn't the document. It's the conversation it forces. AI is already part of your teenager's academic life. Schools are still figuring out their policies. That makes the family conversation more important — not less.

What’s covered
The Cognitive Muscle rule
AI is a fast first draft — not a final answer. Using AI to avoid the work of thinking weakens the skills that matter most. The goal is to use AI in ways that make your thinking stronger, not replace it.
What AI can be used for
Brainstorming, getting feedback on a draft already written, generating practice questions, looking up definitions, and outlining — as long as the content is written yourself.
What is not allowed
Submitting AI-generated text as original work, using AI to answer questions meant to be worked through independently, or copying and pasting without reading, checking, and rewriting.
Privacy
No sharing of full name, address, school name, student ID, personal details about family or friends, passwords, photos, or anything you wouldn't post publicly.
Disclosure
When AI is used in a meaningful way, say so. Example: "I used ChatGPT to brainstorm this outline and then wrote the essay myself."
Emotional use
If a chatbot is used for emotional support, tell a parent or trusted adult — not as punishment, but for safety. Any conversation involving self-harm or crisis goes to a real person immediately.
How to use it
- 1.Print one copy for each person signing.
- 2.Fill it in together — negotiate the terms. If your teenager pushes back on something, that's the conversation working.
- 3.Both sign and date it.
- 4.Put it somewhere visible — fridge, notice board, inside a school binder.
- 5.Set a date to revisit it in six months. AI tools change fast. Your rules should too.
